In October 2012 we plan to tour a new play 'One of that Despised People'. The play searches out the depth of our Quaker faith when challenged by outside powers. In the 17th Century, Quakers endured imprisonment, torture and death rather than renounce their faith. How strong and resolute would we be today if a similar situation arose?
Jane Simmons is an ordinary Quaker, attending Meeting and living the best life she can. The new authorities are looking for her son, 'a dangerous radical' and arrest her on spurious charges in order to get to him. How resolute can Jane be in face of increasing physical and psychological pressure to defend both her son and her faith?
This new and powerful play by the Quaker Theatre Company's Artistic Director, Alan Avery, goes to the very roots of what Friends believe in, four hundred years after Quakerism's foundations. It is not suitable for anyone under 16 years of age.
